NCEA 2.2 Train to Gain and Google Apps

I have been using google apps to teach and assess level 1 and 2 PE this term, at GBHS we are looking at 2.2 train to gain - the boys have to facilitate their own training session and reflect on how it went.  The assessment is internal and requires the boys to have a knowledge of Methods of Training, Principles of training, as well as an understanding of physiological responses to exercise.  Each week this term I have been taking an hour long training session to highlight the different methods and
principles used.  Once we finish the session I 'share' through google drive a summary of the session, here is one I ran on fartlek training.  Once the students have a look at the summary they fill in their own log 'resource C'.  This is a document I created in the drive that is a table - similar to the one in the NCEA resource.  They can update it when they can and is an ongoing process.  It is easy for me to see how many entries they have completed, and the quality of the work.

As well as physically completing the training session and filling in the logs the boys also studied MOTS and POTS in class - I adopted a flipped method and allowed the boys access to the powerpoints I was using by also uploading them to google drive - we discussed them in class and had a couple of fun quizzes to find out any gaps in knowledge.

I then shared a document with the boys that they could use to plan the session.  It was modified from the original in the NCEA resource, but still covers the main points.....

The boys then went away over the easter break and collaborated online over the training session, using notes and knowledge from class to make sure correct terminology was used - I can also immediately see who has prepared a session and comment on any areas that may be problematic or need improvisation.

Over the next couple of weeks the boys will lead the sessions and continue to reflect on them in the log.  I have not presented the final report to them at the moment - but I will give it to them before the holiday.  It mentions that it can be in any format that they choose, I think I will encourage them to take pictures of the training session and then share the report with the whole group.  This is essentially the same as a blog, but we don't have to go through a tutorial on how to set one up.  They could film it, but the editing would add another layer of work for the students.  Not sure about using technology for the sake of using it - going to try and keep it simple with things we have set up already, but allow the boys to elaborate if they wish.  A powerpoint presentation is another option for the usual extroverts in the class!!!

Maybe a blog as a training log would have been good from the start, but it would have been a bit more tricky to ensure that a common format was stuck to - and the boys would have spent most of the work time choosing fonts and backgrounds and not doing anything constructive!!!

Motivation and homework follow up...

Last week I wrote about setting a homework challenge to learn muscles of the body as an online game - the students then had to post screen grabs on google+ to show they had done it and to be in contention for the hallowed prize of 'King of the Muscles' and a cafe voucher. I wasn't quite sure how it was going to go, but by Thursday the buzz in all my senior classes was about ' poke-a-muscle '.  The boys were so excited about it they'd post a score, and then find out that someone had beaten them, and then rush out of the class at interval to get to a computer and beat the top score.  I even had an email on Saturday (two days after the due date) from two boys who had been practicing and spent the afternoon working together to try and beat the original high scores they had submitted with the homework!!!
